Bacteriophages are the richest, most dynamic, and genetically diverse life forms in the biosphere. It is estimated that there are 1031 phages in the world, which continuously infect 1023 to 1024 bacterial cells per second. In other words, if we place all 1031 phage particles side by side, the length of this line will be about 200 million light-years or about 1.892 * 1021 kilometers.The number and diversity of bacteriophages exceed the number and diversity of bacteria, which is reflected in their different habitats, reproduction cycles, infection strategies, and ability to transfer hosts. The comparative analysis of phage sequences provides a way to understand the selective pressure acting on phage genes, and to further understand the evolutionary history of phage.
