Detection of Phages from Environmental SamplesSince there are a large number of phages on the earth, any environmental source containing the target bacteria may contain phages. In the past 50 years, the biology of phages has been so extensively studied that almost no interesting questions about them remain unanswered. Phages are studied in environmental science because they are an important part of biological systems. They are the most abundant biological entities on the planet and are important because they help control bacterial populations, food web processes, biogeochemical cycles, and enhance prokaryotic biodiversity through horizontal gene transfer. There is also evidence that phages are a reliable surrogate indicator for pathogenic enteroviruses. Enterovirus can also be transmitted through feces, but it is difficult to detect. Attempts to clarify the phylogeny of phages may depend on comparative studies between similar phages isolated from different environments. The availability of relatively fast and inexpensive methods for detecting and counting phages makes it an attractive tool for assessing fecal contamination in environmental samples.
