Phage may be the most abundant entity in the biosphere. The total number of phage particles is estimated to be about 1031, which is 10 times the estimated number of bacterial cells on earth. Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA phages) tail phages or Cercoviruses account for 95% of all known phages and may constitute most of the phages on earth. Among the approximately 5,500 phages examined by electron microscopy (EM), approximately 96% have tails, a special organelle used for host identification, cell wall penetration, and genome ejection into the host. A large number of bacteriophages are currently used in the food industry and agriculture. However, the recent increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics has aroused interest in the use of bacteriophages to treat human bacterial infections, indicating that more bacteriophages are needed in the future. The combination of high demand and wide application also requires efficient phage production processes that operate with low production costs and high productivity.
