Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a protein that exhibits bright green fluorescence when exposed to light in the blue to ultraviolet range. GFP has been found in other organisms, including corals, sea anemones, worms, copepods, and schistosomiasis. It has been used to make biosensors, and many animals have been created that express GFP, a proof of concept that a gene can be expressed in a given organism, selected organ, or cell of interest. GFP can be introduced into an animal or other species by transgenic techniques and retained in its genome and that of its progeny. Most commercially available GFP and similar fluorescent protein genes are approximately 730 base pairs in length. Natural protein has 238 amino acids. Its molecular weight is 27 kD. GFP can be developed as an autofluorescent scaffold and used as a probe for bioimaging. It is often difficult to quantitatively measure the quality and characteristics of phage libraries displayed in vivo. However, with autofluorescent scaffolds such as GFP, library properties can be easily quantified.
