Pest Control by Phage

Pests are those species that attack certain resources we humans want to protect, and succeed enough in being economically important or just a major annoyance. Trees and woody plants, for example, maybe attacked individually by many pests and pathogens or infected by multiple microorganisms. In particular, infections caused by tree-specific bacterial pathogens have become more common over the past decade. Phages are an important part of the plant microbiome and are increasingly used in plant-pathogen control due to their highly specific host range and ability to selectively kill only target pathogens. Creative Biolabs has a range of biocontrol technologies that can be used for such purposes, including phage therapy, and genetically modified insect approaches, and so on. Biological control is the use of living organisms to suppress pest populations, making them less destructive than otherwise. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate only within their specific host bacteria. Most phages isolated for biocontrol purposes belong to the order Caurovirinae. All members of the Caudovirales commonly used by our group have a genome with double-stranded DNA packaged into an icosahedral capsid, and a tail structure that binds to the bacterial host cell.
