ssRNA Phage Production

Mature ssRNA phage virus particles are composed of an icosahedral T = 3 protein shell, composed of 178 copies of coat protein (CP) and one copy of “A” protein (AP). The ssRNA bacteriophage belonging to the Leviviridae family is one of the smallest viruses and it infects them by attaching to the pili structures of various gram-negative bacteria. Because of their simplicity, they have been intensively studied as models for understanding various problems in molecular biology and virology. Some of the properties of ssRNA that have been studied, such as coat protein-RNA interaction and the ability to easily form virus-like particles (VLPs) in recombinant expression systems, have facilitated many practical applications. Several applications of ssRNA bacteriophages rely on the production of recombinant VLPs from bacteriophages. ssRNA bacteriophages and their components have been found to be useful in many practical applications, such as MS2 labeling, armored RNA technology, drug delivery, nanoreactor construction, and vaccine development1.
