Phage Enrichment

Bacteriophages are the most abundant life form on earth. They play an important role in bacterial ecology, adaptation to new environments, and bacterial evolution and pathogenesis. Bacteriophages are very common in soil, and the direct counting method found that there are 107-109 phages per gram of soil. Phages are also very abundant in fresh water and seawater, which may be close to 107 per milliliter. The global number is estimated to be 1031. However, certain phages are sometimes difficult to isolate directly, so enrichment procedures are usually required. Unfortunately, this technique will limit the diversity of isolated phages, because some enrichment schemes will cause bias because the phages that can reproduce most efficiently under experimental conditions dominate.
