Phage Test

Phages are naturally occurring viruses that infect bacteria. They are not affected by antimicrobial resistance and can target bacteria in biofilms. Phages can be lysogenic and coexist with the host by inserting themselves into the bacterial genome, or they can be lysed and destroy the host. The lytic phage replicates in the host and then releases many new phages that can infect more bacteria. The first step in testing phage is reproduction and purification. Once the concentrated and purified phage culture is produced, it can be stored and/or used for antimicrobial research using phage-specific hosts. Phage contamination of bacterial cultures is a common complication in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The presence of phages in the culture can interfere with the identification and isolation of bacteria, thereby biasing the results. Bacteriophages are not sensitive to antibiotic treatment and therefore difficult to remove from infected bacterial cultures. Phages are ubiquitous and abundant, which may become a serious problem for companies that use microbial cell lines to produce recombinant products.
